The Three Games Every Leader Is Playing
Most leadership development picks one arena and goes deep.
Mindset. Strategy. Culture. Teams. Well-being. Purpose.
All of it matters.
None of it is the whole picture.
This is how I think about what the whole picture actually looks like.
Inner Game
This is where the work deepens and creates generative change.
Love
It deepens your capacity to love and be loved — starting with yourself, and expanding outward. The warmth, trust, and depth of your relationships predict your health, longevity, and life satisfaction more than your achievements or your income. That capacity is built here, from the inside out.
Lead
And it builds the foundation of personal leadership: the mindset, the regulation, the inner resources that determine what you're capable of when it counts. This includes the work I call inner narrative — the story you're running about who you are, what you deserve, what's possible, and whether you're enough. That narrative shapes every decision you make, every risk you take or don't, every relationship you show up in. Most leaders don't know what story they're running. They just live its consequences. This is where that changes. This is where identity evolves. Where you stop being driven by the version of yourself that got you here and start leading from what's actually required next.
Live
This work deepens your capacity to live fully. Loosening the armor and conditioning that cost you presence and vitality. Surfacing the blind spots that shape decisions without your awareness. Building emotional range and attunement, mental focus and clarity, physical strength and resilience, and connection to what gives your work meaning. The full engagement of mind, heart, body, and purpose.
Outer Game
Your leadership in the world. Where it’s expressed, applied, and tested every day.
Love
The relationships that determine what gets built: your team, your board, your customers. Trust, care, and candor run in both directions — backed by high standards and accountability. You care about the product, the customer, the value being created. That care is felt. It drives what gets built.
Lead
The vision, values, strategy, and execution that need to stay coherent as your company grows. Decisions made with the right people, at the right pace, with the rigor each situation deserves. Conversations that create trust and momentum — or quietly destroy them. The culture taking shape whether you're intentional about it or not. The value you create for customers and the impact that compounds.
Live
And integration — the capacity to bring your full self across all the roles that matter. Work. Family. Health. Community. Not compartmentalized performance, but a leader whose presence and care don't stop at the door.
Bigger Game
What you're building, and who it's for.
Love
Your contribution to something larger than the company — the people in it, the customers it serves, the community it touches. Impact that ripples outward from how you lead, love, and live. Legacy isn't what you leave behind. It's what you build while you're here.
Lead
The whole-system view — shaping conditions for others to thrive, not just managing the org chart. Thinking in longer time horizons. Leading in a way that creates self-reinforcing momentum and outlasts your tenure.
Live
And full engagement — the fulfillment and meaning that make the whole thing worth it. Not just a successful company. A life fully lived: present at work, present at home, present across every role you carry. The vitality that comes not from achievement alone, but from love expressed, leadership given, and a life that's genuinely your own.
